“I’ve been pushing you away,” she told him.

“Yeah, you have,” he agreed.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. You had to figure some things out. I understand.”

She smiled weakly at him as tears formed in her eyes and slipped down her face.

“Mac, what is it?” he asked, taking her hand in his.

“It’s silly,” she said.

“Tell me.”

“I want to be held and there’s no one to do that. I’m a Marine. I should be stronger than this,” she said as the tears continued to stream down her face.

“Mac, you are strong,” he told her, squeezing her hand. “But you are also a woman with needs and desires,” he told her tenderly.

“I’m staying here with you tonight,” he decided.

“What about your new girlfriend? It’s Christmas Eve. Don’t you want to be with the one you love when you wake up Christmas morning?”

He smiled at her. “I will be. And what do you mean, my new girlfriend?”

“When I stopped by your apartment last night, you had company. I assumed she was your girlfriend.”

“Mac, that wasn’t my girlfriend. She is a college buddy’s wife. She’s planning a surprise party for his next birthday and wanted my opinion on some things.”

She sighed inaudibly in relief.

“Mac, we need to talk.”

“I know.”

He sat beside her on the bed and took her hand. “Mac, do you know how much you mean to me?”

She smiled. “I know you love me, Harm, but why would you want me? I can’t even give you children.”

“That doesn’t matter. Besides, there are other ways to have a baby.”

“What if those options fail? Don’t you want a child of your own?”

“Only if it’s with you, Mac.” His tender declaration brought on a fresh bout of tears.

“Mac, of course I want a child with you. I have dreams of a dark-haired little girl that looks like you. If that doesn’t happen, I will be sad and heartbroken, but we’ll find another way. But what would destroy me, Mac, is losing you.”

He stood up and took off his jacket, tie and shoes, settling in for the night. Getting ready to sit back down, he thought better of it, remembering Mac’s wish. Looking at her now, her face covered with a red bruise, he still thought she was the most beautiful woman alive.

Going to the other side of the bed, he slipped in beside her.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Fulfilling your wish and mine.”

Gently, so as not to hurt her bruised body, he tenderly pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her in a loving embrace.

“I’m not hurting you, am I?” he asked.

“No, it feels wonderful. Maybe I can finally get a good night’s sleep.”

“Why? Haven’t you been sleeping well?” he asked.

“No. I haven’t slept in 4 nights. I’m exhausted.”

“Mac, close your eyes and try to sleep. We’ll talk later. I’ll be here when you wake up. I’ll always be here.”

“I love you, Harm,” she told him, snuggling into his arms.

“I love you, too, Mac,” he whispered as they closed their eyes and drifted off.
