Harm picked up his Navy hat and briefcase and turned off the light. He was just about to step foot out of his office when his telephone rang. He debated answering it; he just wanted to go home, get something to eat and give Mac a call. He picked up the phone anyway.

“Hello.”

“Harmon Rabb?” a voice on the other end inquired.

“This is he.”

“This is Nurse Maru at the Pennington Medical Center. Sarah MacKenzie was involved in a car accident this evening.”

“Is she okay?”

“I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t know the extent of her injuries. The doctor is examining her now.” She paused. “They asked me to call you because she kept repeating your name. We found your number in her PDA.”

“Thank you,” he told her, replacing the receiver and hurrying out the door.

In his car, his mind wandered as he sped along at a high rate of speed. He remembered their first meeting. “Lieutenant Commander Harmon Rabb. Major Sarah MacKenzie,” Admiral Chegwidden had introduced them. “Mac,” she told him, extending her hand in greeting. He hesitated shaking it, not because he didn’t want her there, but because her beauty took his breath away. In that instant he knew she would change his life forever. “Harm,” he finally told her, clasping her outstretched hand.

Stopping at a red light, he remembered, “You have someone that will always love you,” he had told her, wanting to say more, but didn’t. “And you have someone that loves you,” she told him.

A few years ago they made their agreement. “Five years from this moment if neither of us is in a relationship, we’ll go have us a kid,” he told her. “You and me? Have a baby together?” she asked, surprised. “With your looks and my brains, he’ll be…perfect,” he said. “Don’t make a promise you can’t keep,” she told him. He was serious, though.

Five years later, a doctor’s diagnosis broke both their hearts. Endometriosis. She had less than a five percent chance of conceiving. She told him all of this on a night meant for celebration; the admiral’s night. “How are you handling it?” he had asked. “With difficulty,” she told him in a voice that broke his heart all over again.

Back in the present moment, he screeched to a halt outside Pennington Medical Center and hurried inside. At the visitor’s desk, he asked where she was. After hearing the floor number, he took off in search of her, not waiting for a room number.

Arriving on the correct floor, he frantically searched room after room until he found her. “Hey,” she says as he walks in her room.

“What happened?” he asks her. “I wasn’t paying attention.” She pauses then asks, “How did you know?”

“You kept repeating my name. They found my number in your PDA.”

Looking at her now, her face covered with a red bruise, she is still beautiful to him.

“Has the doctor been in to see you yet?” he asks.

She nods. “Yes. He just left,” she tells him.

“What did he say? Are you okay?”

She smiles. “I’m fine under the circumstances. I have no broken bones or internal injuries. The red bruise will go away in a few days and so will the soreness.” He sighed in relief.

She noticed that he was barely holding it together. “Harm, what is it?” He sat down beside her on the bed and took her hand.

“I was so afraid I was going to lose you,” he said, the tears finally escaping his eyes.

“Oh, Harm,” she said, sitting up and wrapping her arms around him. “I’ll always be by your side.”
