Standing in front of the bookcase, she looks at all the scrapbooks, one for each year, and ponders where all the years have gone. Pulling one off the shelf, she carries it over to the couch and sits down. Running her hand over the cover, almost reverently, she opens the book. The cover, made of a chestnut-colored cloth, which reminded her of Harm’s eyes, had the year stenciled on the front.
2005, the year her life changed forever. Turning to the first page, she went back in time. A photograph of the gang at McMurphy’s when they announced their engagement. She smiled. Reassignment commissions, Harm to London and she to San Diego, had spurred Harm into action. The thought of not seeing her everyday had made Harm finally tell her what was in his heart. She finally got to hear those three magical words.
Flipping the page, she was reminded of one of the happiest days of her life. A photograph of them on their wedding day smiled back at her. In her mind, she was 35 again. Dressed in her white wedding dress, she was never so nervous in her life. She carried yellow and red roses, symbolizing their precious friendship and remarkable love. Because her dad had died a year earlier, she had asked Bud to walk her down the aisle. Taking Harm’s hand in hers, her nervousness was suddenly gone. As she said her vows, tears glistened in her eyes and then slid down her face.
Nine months later, they welcomed Sarah and Daniel into their family and their hearts. That was a big surprise. They expected Sarah, but Daniel really threw them for a loop. Oh, what a joy they both were–and continued to be. She was very lucky to be their mother.
Turning the page, she was reminded of their first Christmas together as husband and wife and as mommy and daddy. The kids were just a couple of weeks old, and of course, slept through it all so Mattie had opened their gifts for them. They had gotten them all kinds of clothes and toys. For Mattie, they had gotten the laptop and iPod that she had so desperately wanted. She had gotten Harm a camcorder, with which to tape every waking and non-waking moment of the kids. Harm had gotten her a beautiful heart-shaped sapphire ring, a diamond sparkling beside the gem.
Tears were sparkling in her eyes when she felt a presence sit down beside her. When she looked up, he tenderly wiped her tears away. Gently taking the book from her, he lay it on the table beside him. Turning back to his wife, he pulled her into his arms and held her, enjoying the feel of her in his arms, even after all these years.
“I love you, Harm,” she told him.
“And I love you, Mac.”
