she held his tiny hand
in her own
the only thing she could reach
through the incubator window

born a month too soon
his tiny lungs were not yet fully developed
so he had to stay inside
his tiny plastic home

tears silently fell as she watched
she was too scared to think beyond
the next few minutes
to what the future may hold

as her tears escalated
into heart-wrenching sobs
he silently pulled her into his arms
his own tears sliding down his face

and as he pulled her closer
his only wish was that
their newborn son
would survive this ordeal

though their hearts were breaking
their love for each other
would pull them through this
and whatever the future held
